Ryan Lochte wants to be the next Kim Kardashian
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Lochte wasn't embarrassed to admit that he's hoping to ascend to Kardashian's level of fame. "Kim started from pretty much nothing, and now everyone everywhere knows who she is," he says. "That's what I want to do."
Perhaps forgetting that he already has a leg up on his idol in that he's entering the reality TV game with a great deal more fame than Kardashian did thanks to his Olympic swimming caeer, Lochte is certain his new network home is just place to help him reach her heights: "I've seen what E! has done in the past with reality shows like hers. Today she's huge."
The star of "What Would Ryan Lochte Do?" (premiering April 21) is positive that he needs to strike when the iron's hot -- and he's not sure the iron's ever been hotter. "When I walk down the street, people recognize me, and that never happened before. Now's my chance," he explains.
As for what to expect when his series premieres, the 28-year-old swimmer tells THR that, without meaning to, he put his own "Lochte edge" on it by breaking the fourth wall and speaking directly to producers and crew while on camera, a big no-no in the genre. "During one scene, I looked at the camera out of the blue and said, 'Did you just see that?' I thought I made a mistake," he says.
Suzanne Kolb, president of E! Entertainment, tells the publication that, while the "Lochte edge" isn't a practice they'll be sticking with for other programming, it worked for the show. "It felt natural, and from our perspective it answered the question: What would Ryan Lochte do with a reality show? He would talk to his producer."
What would Kim Kardashian think?
