In fact, Murphy spent a considerable amount of time in his acceptance speech telling jokes at his own expense, including taking a page from Jimmy Kimmel and reading a handful of mean tweets about him from when his award was announced. "Ryan Murphy is a genius ... at sucking," one of them said.

The "Glee" and "American Horror Story" creator and "The Normal Heart" director also cracked that the advice he gives young people is "Surround yourself with more talented people ... and then take all the credit."

More seriously, Murphy thanked many of his collaborators over the years and said he was comfortable with the definition of genius as 1 percent inspiration and 99 percent hard work. Whatever else you may think of Murphy, it's hard to dispute that the man has a prodigious work ethic.
