WGN America has renewed freshman drama "Salem" for Season 2.

The network's first original scripted drama has earned a 13-episode second season. Production begins later this year, and it will premiere sometime in 2015.

"At WGN America, we are committed to delivering compelling, brand-defining programming rich with fascinating characters and 'Salem' has done just that," says Matt Cherniss, president and general nanager of WGN America and Tribune Studios. "[EPs] Brannon Braga, Adam Simon, the talented cast and our great partners at Fox 21 have opened up an intriguing world that has captivated viewers. We look forward to bringing more great storytelling, scares and surprises to viewers as the saga unfolds."

"Salem" stars Janet Montgomery, Shane West, Seth Gabel, Xander Berkeley, Ashley Madekwe, Tamzin Merchant, Elise Eberle and Iddo Goldberg, and is a fictional take on the real-life drama surrounding the Salem Witch trials in 17th century Massachusetts.

The dark drama airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET/9 p.m. CT on WGN America (which is owned by Zap2it's parent, Tribune Company).
