'Seriously McDonalds' racist tax? Twitter hoax leads to outrage

McDonalds.jpgThanks to Twitter, information is spreading faster than ever. Unfortunately, so is misinformation. Over the weekend, a photo that seemed to depict a notice posted inside a McDonalds' shop circulated online.

The notice read, "PLEASE NOTE: As an insurance measure due in part to a recent string of robberies, African-American customers are now required to pay an additional fee of $1.50 per transaction. Thank you for your cooperation."

The photo circulated so quickly that the words "Seriously McDonalds" hit the Twitter trending topics list. It's not actually a new picture -- while we don't know where it originated, it was posted last year on a McDonalds fan blog. (Yes, apparently, they have those.)

McDonalds assures customers that the photo is false and no such notice has ever been posted in one of their locations. "That pic is a senseless & ignorant hoax McD's values ALL our customers. Diversity runs deep in our culture on both sides of the counter," read a tweet from their official account.

In case there was any doubt about the validity of the image, the toll-free number given at the bottom of the notice is actually the number for KFC. So go forth, enjoy your McFlurry sans $1.50 race tax.
