"Sherlock" Season 4 may still be years away, but star Martin Freeman thinks the BBC could air a "Sherlock" Christmas special for the holiday season of 2015.

The news comes from an interview with Britain's Telegraph published on Sunday (June 29). Freeman first indicates that "Sherlock" production could resume in early 2015 -- saying it "looks pretty likely" at that time. When questioned further about what is coming in the hugely popular mystery series, Freeman offers a prediction with reservations.

"If that's going to be a special -- I'm speaking off message ... I think that might be for next Christmas," he says. "A Christmas special. That's what I understand."

This is both good news and bad news for "Sherlock" fans. Any sort of return date is a plus, but the Christmas special also indicates that audiences might have to wait even longer for a full Season 4.

Neither the BBC nor U.S. broadcaster PBS has made any announcement about a "Sherlock" return date.
