Should Ian Somerhalder star in 'Fifty Shades of Grey' movie? Vote!

ffm-ian-somerhalder2.jpgE.L. James' novel "Fifty Shades of Grey" became an overnight pop culture phenomenon this spring, hitting the cover of Entertainment Weekly, with film rights sold to Universal Pictures and Focus Features. The erotica tells the tale of the virginal Ana who signs her life (read: her sex life) over to the sexually dominant billionaire Christian Grey, with plenty of detailed BDSM scenes in his "red room of pain."

The story was originally conceived as a novel-length "Twilight" fan fiction available online, but James -- who initally wrote the story under the pen name Snowqueens Icedragon -- took it off the internet and changed the names of Bella and Edward.

Now that it's being made into a movie, it may find another vampire connection. "Vampire Diaries" star Ian Somerhalder admitted today on Ryan Seacrest's radio show that he has heard rumblings that he may be considered for the lead role.

"I absolutely would be up for that," Ian said. "It could be amazing. It could be very, very amazing. I have the book and I just started reading it." Though he declined to suggest an actress for the role of Ana, he did say he hopes that he gets the gig. "Beyond a shadow of a doubt, I think that would be a phenomenal opportunity."

Of course, Ian is one of our all-time faves -- but we're not sure about this one. Unless filmmakers wait to shoot the film in the summer of 2013, Ian would likely have to reduce his role on "The Vampire Diaries" to participate.

On the other hand, doing such a highly anticipated (and very adult) film might help draw some much-needed viewers to "TVD."
