simon-cowell-baby-lauren-silverman-gi.jpg Simon Cowell and girlfriend Lauren Silverman welcomed a baby boy in New York City on Friday (Feb. 14), E! News reports. Cowell was in London filming "Britain's Got Talent" auditions when Silverman went into labor early Friday morning, and rushed on a private plane he'd had on standby for the past week to make it to the birth on time.

UPDATE: Cowell confirmed the birth on Twitter, and revealed that he and Silverman chose the name Eric to honor Cowell's father. He also said mother and baby are doing well

Cowell was by his girlfriend's side as they welcomed their first child together, E! reports. Their son is Cowell's first child and Silverman's second; Silverman has a son with her ex-husband Andrew.

The couple's relationship came to light in a scandalous manner -- Cowell and the Silvermans were longtime friends who frequently vacationed together, but Lauren's adultery with Cowell was cited as a reason for their divorce.

Cowell told Zap2it after an "X Factor" taping in December that he and Sliverman hadn't yet decided where they will raise their son, but he's been getting practice with fatherhood thanks to their new puppies.

"I don't think I would have been a great dad at the age of 20," Cowell says. "But now, I have Squiddly and Diddly [his dogs] and I've trained them. Actually, they're not trained at all -- now that I think about it, they're the worst behaved dogs in Beverly Hills! No, I'll be a good dad and Lauren will be a great mom."

The "X Factor" producer recently departed the now-canceled U.S. version of his show to go back to the original U.K. iteration, but he says that he plans to keep working even after the baby's arrival.

"I''ll drop dead working. I love it. As long as we are relevant, as long as we are having hits, as long as we are creating stars then I love this job," he says. "The minute it stops, we have to stop. I have always said that."
