'Smash': NBC counts on Debra Messing, Katharine McPhee, Anjelica Huston to make beautiful music
Debra Messing is coming back to NBC. But instead of re-igniting her comedy career ("Will & Grace") she's turning her talent to drama and, well, music.
Building on the successes of musical TV -- think FOX's "Glee" and its own latest hit competition show, "The Voice," NBC picked up this Messing-led drama about the behind-the-scenes machinations of putting on a Broadway musical.
Backing up Messing is a strong cast including Anjelica Huston and "American Idol" alumna Katharine McPhee, who performs Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful" in the clip above.
"We're really taking the full season view of the schedule next year. 'The Voice' is coming back in January and is an enormous lead-in for any show," NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt said in a Sunday (May 15) conference call. "The compatibility of 'Smash' is so good with 'The Voice.' It's such a terrific show that deserves the best possible send-off we could give it."
Look for "Smash" at 10 p.m. ET on Monday nights starting in January 2012.
