When Sony took the stage at E3 on Monday (June 9) to tout what's coming for the PlayStation 4, fans and members of the media were delighted by the news of original programming. Sony has greenlit a series based on the comic book series "Powers," created by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming. It's scheduled for a December premiere.

Bendis was on hand for the announcement, showing art from the graphic novels. "Powers" follows two homicide detectives who specialize in cases involving those with super powers. If a superhero is murdered, they get called in.

This isn't the first time "Powers" has been adapted for TV. A pilot was shot for FX in 2011, starring Jason Patric and Lucy Punch in lead roles. It never made it to series, however, despite several rewrites and what FX called a "difficult" adaptation process.

Sony will work with TV veteran Remi Aubuchon ("Falling Skies," "Caprica") and novelist and comic-book author Charlie Huston, among others, on the series. Here's Bendis making the announcement at E3:

Microsoft also has original programming in the works for Xbox One, but used its E3 meeting to focus solely on games.
