Southwest pilot calls flight attendants 'gays and grannies and grandes'

view-from-the-top.jpgIt's been a mixed week for Southwest Airlines. After the company topped other airlines in a service survey, one of its pilots was outed for making some not-so-nice remarks.

CNN reports other airplane crews and controllers overheard an unidentified pilot deliver a rant on flight attendants, calling them a "continuous stream of gays and grannies and grandes." (Those would be remarks on sexual orientation, age and weight, presumably...)

And how did the pilot in question get caught in the first place? Apparently his mic was on when he didn't realize it.

According to an official transcript, a controller chimed in, saying, "OK, someone has a stuck mic and telling us about all their endeavors and we don't need to hear that."

There doesn't seem to be any reason for why this is just coming out now -- the incident took place on a March 25 flight from Austin, Texas, to San Diego, California -- but Southwest officials have now distanced themselves from the remarks internally and publicly.

"The actions of this pilot are, without question, inconsistent with the professional behavior and overall respect that we require from our employees," says the airline.

The apparently remorseful pilot is back in the air -- but only after being reprimanded, suspended without pay enrolling in a diversity education program.
