Statue of Liberty stamp: Post Service fail!

lady-liberty-comp.jpgThe U.S. Postal Service recently issued a new stamp featuring a close-up of the Statue of Liberty. There's just one problem: According to stamp magazine Linn's, the artwork on the stamp isn't based on the Lady Liberty in New York harbor, but on a replica of the statue at Las Vegas' New York-New York casino.

Apparently Lady Liberty's hair is slightly different and the facial features are more sharply defined (check the eyes). And, of course, the Vegas version is much cleaner, not having been exposed to the elements for more than a century.

"We got the image from Getty, who just listed it as Lady Liberty," Postal Service spokesman Roy Betts tells the Washington Post. "They didn't indicate replica. Now, since it's been discovered that it is a replica, if you were to go to Getty's Web site, they list it as a replica."

Betts added, to the New York Times, that although the Postal Service regrets the error, they plan to go with it.

"We still love the stamp design and would have selected this photograph anyway," said Betts.
