'Steel Magnolias' remake: We cast Lifetime's all-black redux
The original 1989 version starred Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Shirley MacLaine, Dolly Parton, Olympia Dukakis and Daryl Hannah. But who should star in the new version? We thought we'd do Lifetime a favor making a few casting suggestions before production gets underway.
M'Lynn Eatenton: In the original, Field played the central character -- a matriarch who doesn't just maintain a home and kitchen straight out of the pages of Southern Living, but has to hold together her family in the wake of a tragedy. We're going to pass on the obvious choice -- Oprah Winfrey -- and cast Angela Bassett as M'Lynn. She'd anchor the movie nicely without overshadowing the rest of the cast.
Shelby Eatenton Latcherie: Roberts played M'Lynn's fragile-yet-tough ("Steel Magnolia"-y) daughter in the original. For this remake, we're thinking Beyonce -- she's got the same high-wattage smile, even if she is already past the "starlet on the verge of superstardom" phase.
Truvy Jones: Parton played this larger-than-life (in more ways than one) hairdresser with a heart. We're thinking that level of drag can only be matched by Tyler Perry.
Ouiser Boudreaux: MacLaine turned in a wry performance as M'Lynn's sarcastic friend with attitude to spare. Wanda Sykes, anyone?
Clairee Belcher: Dukakis rounded out the big players in the original. We're going to go ahead and cast against type by recommending "The Wire" alumna Sonja Sohn. We're pretty sure she's capable of doing pretty much anything.
