Steve Martin apologizes for racist tweet following backlash

Steve Martin's comedic Twitter streak came to an end thanks to one tweet that did not go over the way the "Saturday Night Live" alum had hoped.

Following his self-started rumor about dating Khloe Kardashian, Martin's response to a follower's misspelling of "lasagna" came off pretty racist. The tweet came during a time when followers were talking to him about different spellings of words that sound the same.

"Is this how you spell lasonia?" a fan tweets, to which Martin responds, "It depends. Are you in an African-American neighborhood or at an Italian restaurant?"

It didn't take Martin long to realize his mistake. He quickly deleted the tweet, but it had been seen and shared by enough livid followers that he posted an apology.

"In retrospect, bad joke," he tweets. "I did apologize. But again, a second later I realized what an offensive thing I'd done. Deep bow. ... My tweet was highly inappropriate."
