Steven Tyler leaves 'American Idol': Will Jennifer Lopez follow?

The Aerosmith singer and FOX announced Thursday (July 12) that Tyler won't be part of the show's 12th season in 2013.

"After some long ... hard ...thoughts ... I've decided it's time for me to let go of my mistress 'American Idol' before she boils my rabbit," Tyler says in a statement. "I strayed from my first love, Aerosmith, and I'm back -- but instead of begging on my hands and knees, I've got two fists in the air and I'm kicking the door open with my band."

Tyler's departure means "Idol" will have at least one new judge next year. He and Jennifer Lopez both joined the show in 2011, and Lopez has hinted she might be on her way out as well.

"I love all the guys on the show. I love the family that's there. ... I've just enjoyed it so much. But I am thinking that maybe it's time for me to go and do other things that I really love to do," Lopez said Thursday on the "Today" show. She quickly added, "But then again I really love the show. So ..."

Tyler's parting with the show is amicable, so don't be surprised if he and Aerosmith pop up on the show next season in support of the band's new album, due out in November.

"If you had told me 10 years ago he would be a judge on 'American Idol,' I would have thought it impossible," "Idol" creator and executive producer Simon Fuller says. "The fact that this became a reality and we had the pleasure of him gracing our stage for two seasons makes me very proud."
