'Supernatural': Felicia Day talks 'full-blown, in your face testosterone' on setAdd to Favorites | Supernatural
"To walk onto the set was like full-blown, in your face testosterone," she laughs. "But in a great way, because there's just this guy-camaraderie on the set that's very different from anything I've been involved with. They're doing work, but at the same time they're all having fun. I was definitely overwhelmed a little, at first, but very quickly found my place in all the testosterone."
Her character, computer hacker Charlie, has a similar reaction to Sam and Dean. "I kind of feel like in her head, Charlie kind of felt what I felt when I first met the guys in real life, because they're so larger than life in a sense," she says. "They're such macho guy's guys. Obviously, she;s a little bit thrown off, but then over the arc of the episode, she finds that sort of working relationship. Charlie's kind of a smart-ass, so even if she's intimidated, she's not going to ever show it."
Over the course of seven seasons, "Supernatural" has featured many guest stars who, like Day, are best known for their work with Joss Whedon. So why did it take so long for her to get here?
"I actually yelled at my agents. 'Why am I not auditioning for Supernatural?'" she jokes. "To me it's the one show on the air that has the spirit that I remember from Buffy, and at the same time, it has a little bit of a darker twist to it." When producers contacted her in January to offer her a role, she didn't have any room in her schedule -- so she made room.
Charlie was tailor-made for Day. "She works in IT at Richard Roman Enterprises, and the cool thing about her is that she's a hacker, she's a tech girl, and she's a fangirl, so there are a lot of things that I personally related to," Day says.
Gay characters on "Supernatural" are few and far between, and the fact that Charlie is a lesbian throws Sam and Dean off their game a little bit. "Charlie is into girls, so she's able to kind of go toe-to-toe with them and there's none of that sexy attraction thing going on," Day reveals. "I would venture to say that it's almost like a little sister kind of attitude in a sense."
Her lack of experience with men leads her to need a little coaching from Dean when it comes time to flirt her way into a restricted area. You can watch the fun clip by clicking here. "I didn't see Jensen performing; they shot that on a day that I wasn't working," Day says. "I had that in my head, the way that he was reading the lines to me, and it turned out almost exactly the way I thought it would, so thank goodness for that. It's a great scene. The cool thing about this episode is that there's a lot of humor in it. I think there are going to be a lot of very quotable lines that people are going to remember."
Tune in tonight, Friday April 27, at 9 p.m. EST.
