'Supernatural' poll: Should Castiel turn into a human?Add to Favorites | Supernatural
Currently, Castiel is torn between the two worlds. The angel boss-lady Naomi has manipulated his "programming" so that he unconsciously obeys her orders, with the intention of keeping the angel tablet out of the Winchesters' and demons' hands. The angel tablet, similar to the demon tablet, is inscribed with instructions on how to banish the angels from earth and keep them locked in heaven forever.
Naturally, the angels, who seem to enjoy meddling with human lives and have previously shown hope to turn the planet into their own personal paradise, aren't really up for that. With a few exceptions -- Castiel being the most noteworthy, obviously -- angels haven't exactly been a positive force on the "Supernatural" world. If the Winchesters are looking to get rid of the demons, they might also be interested in banishing angels forever.
Earlier this month, Jared Padalecki speculated that the boys might be willing to send Castiel back to heaven permanently if it meant the rest of the angels would be off their backs. "I absolutely think the boys would sacrifice Castiel to get rid of the angels," he said. "I think they are, not one-track minded, but goal-oriented enough to where you've seen them sacrifice themselves or others to try and accomplish a bigger objective ... I feel like they would do it. I could be wrong, but I feel like they would do it."
Since Collins was announced as a series regular in Season 9, we can probably rule that out as a possibility at this point. But that angel tablet is still around, and it will become a very significant focal point toward the end of Season 8.
Thus, some fans have speculated that Castiel could potentially become human. We've seen it done before, when an angel ripped out her grace and fell in Season 4. In Season 5, we even witnessed a glimpse of a future where Castiel was a human - who was very different from the angel we've grown to love.
While it's unlikely that Castiel would lose his grace and join the Winchesters on the road full-time -- Collins isn't contracted to appear in every single episode next season -- his becoming human would present an opportunity to get rid of all the angels and demons and start fresh, while keeping our favorite around. Taking Heaven and Hell out of the equation could give "Supernatural" a chance to refocus its efforts on the urban legends and ghost stories that put the show on the map in the first place.
