'Supernatural' preview: Is Sam teaming up with Lucifer?

spn-sam-lucifer-714.jpgWhen " Supernatural's" seventh season began, Sam ( Jared Padalecki) was hallucinating Lucifer ( Mark Pellegrino) vividly, and was so overwhelmed by the hallucinations that at one point, he whipped out a gun.

As the season progressed, he found ways to manage his crazy. Dean ( Jensen Ackles) helped him use physical pain via a wound on his hand to ground himself, and he's been focusing on exercise and health to keep his mind off of... well, off of his mind. Still, it's implied that the hallucinations haven't let up so much as they've been ignored.

This week, they'll return full throttle when a case hits close to home and triggers Sam. Pellegrino makes his reappearance. "'Repo Man' starts as kind of a hard-boiled mystery," says executive producer Robert Singer. "A case they thought they had solved seems to reappear, a demon they thought they'd put back in hell seems to have come back."

Sam and Dean split up and, in an unfortunate twist, Sam ends up working with Lucifer to solve the case. "In part of our mythology of Sam being haunted by the Devil, the only way that Sam seems to be able to get to the bottom of the case is to let the Devil kind of back into his mind. He's kept him out for a number of episodes now. It helps in the case, but it's a very dangerous place for Sam to be."

As Padalecki told us, letting Lucifer back in is the beginning of a major unraveling for Sam, who stops sleeping and ends up bound for an insane asylum.
