In February 2012, singer Taylor Swift asked 18-year-old Kevin McGuire to accompany her to the Academy of Country Music Awards. The request came as a result of a Facebook campaign to get Taylor to go to prom with Kevin, who was battling leukemia.

Unfortunately, McGuire was hospitalized before the awards show and was unable to attend. That didn't stop Taylor from sending a special thank you to Kevin during her acceptance speech for Entertainer of the Year, though.

A year later, Swift and McGuire were finally able to go on their date. According to Entertainment Weekly, Kevin and his family were flown to Las Vegas, to attend Sunday's show, and met with Taylor before the telecast began.

Before leaving home for the show, Kevin told a CBS affiliate in Philadelphia that the date held special meaning for him. "Going through what we've been through," he says, "it's symbolic, in a way. It started my chapter with my cancer. Now it's behind me; I can close the book on it." Next up, Kevin starts college in the Fall.
