Taylor Swift 'We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together' lyrics: Who is it about?

taylor-swift-we-are-never-ever-getting-back-together-cover.jpg Taylor Swift's new single, "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" shot to the top of the iTunes chart just hours after it was released on Monday evening, when Swift debuted it at a listening party for fans at her Nashville home. Though Swift says she didn't have any songwriting collaborators on her last album, Speak Now, her new album Red will feature a lot of new sounds courtesy of some big-name cowriters

Max Martin and Shellback are credited with writing "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" with Swift -- Martin, of course, being the prolific Swedish producer behind songs like Britney Spears' "...Baby One More Time" and Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone." Martin also worked with Avril Lavigne on four songs for her record "Goodbye Lullaby," so it's no surprise that Swift's new song has a very Avril sound to it -- relying on catchy pop hooks and gimmicks (like spoken-word sections and a crowd-pleasing "Whee!" exclamation) as opposed to Swift's usual lyrical depth and country twang.

Speaking of lyrics, Swift is famous for telling it like it is in her songs, without filtering details that may point to exes like John Mayer and Joe Jonas. We've posted the full lyrics of the song below, so let's get to over-analyzing. Which ex do you think she's talking about? For the record, Swift has confirmed that she wrote the song about an actual ex-boyfriend, whose friend stopped by the studio while she was working on the record, inspiring Martin to urge her to write a song about it.

Our best guess? We think this one has Parachute frontman Will Anderson written all over it. He and Swift had a hot-and-cold relationship this winter, and he seems like the type to listen to cool indie records. Plus, we'd like to think that Jake Gyllenhaal would inspire a more mature song than this one. (And we're hoping that he did, since Red boasts a whopping 16 songs.)

I remember when we broke up
The first time saying "This is it, I've had enough!"
Cause like we hadn't seen each other in a month
When you said you needed space (what?)
Then you come around again and say
"Baby, I miss you, and I swear I'm gonna change"
Trust me, remember how that lasted for a day?
I say "I hate you", we break up, you call me, I love you

Ooooh-ooh ooh ooh ooh
We called it off again last night but
Ooooh-ooh ooh ooh ooh
This time I'm telling you, I'm telling you

We are never ever, ever getting back together
We are never ever, ever getting back together
You go talk to your friends, talk to my friends, talk to me
But we are never ever, ever, ever getting back together
(Like. Ever.)

I'm really gonna miss you picking fights
And me falling for it screaming that I'm right
And you would hide away and find your peace of mind
With some indie record that's much cooler than mine

Ooooh-ooh ooh ooh ooh
You called me up again tonight but
Ooooh-ooh ooh ooh ooh
This time I'm telling you, I'm telling you

We are never ever, ever getting back together
We are never ever, ever getting back together
You go talk to your friends, talk to my friends, talk to me (talk to me)
But we are never ever, ever, ever getting back together

Ooooh-ooh ooh ooh ooh (yeah)
Ooooh-ooh ooh ooh ooh (yeah)
Ooooh-ooh ooh ooh ooh (yeah)
Oh ohhh

I used to think that we were forever, ever
And I used to say "Never say never"

[spoken]
So he calls me up and he's like
"I still love you" and I'm like, I'm just...
This is exhausting, you know like
We're never getting back together
Like ever.

No, we are never ever, ever getting back together
We are never ever, ever getting back together
You go talk to your friends, talk to my friends, talk to me
But we are never ever, ever, ever getting back together, we...

(Ooooh-ooh ooh ooh ooh
Ooooh-ooh ooh ooh ooh)
Getting back together, we...
(Ooooh-ooh ooh ooh ooh)
Ohh, getting back together, yeah

You go talk to your friends, talk to my friends, talk to me (talk to me)
But we are never ever, ever, ever getting back together
