'The Amazing Spider-Man' climbs to the top of the box office

The franchise reboot made an estimated $65 million over the weekend, bringing its total take since Tuesday's (July 3) opening to $140 million range. That's just behind the $144 million the first "Spider-Man" starring Tobey Maguire made after six days in 2002.

The new "Spider-Man" also took in about double the amount of its closest competitor over the weekend. Last week's leader, "Ted," finished second with just under $32.6 million and has earned a cumulative $120 million so far.

"Brave" ($20.2 million) finished third, and the Oliver Stone-directed "Savages" ($16.2 million) came in fourth. The weekend's other new release, "Katy Perry: Part of Me," made only an estimated $7.15 million to finish eighth. Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom" ($4.6 million) and Woody Allen's "To Rome With Love" ($3.5 million) continued to do solid business in more limited release.
