On "The Americans," Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell play dysfunctional but often passionate fake spouses and real spies, Phillip and Elizabeth Jennings. In real life, however, all rumors of a romantic relationship between the co-stars are false.

Rhys even thinks the rumors are amusing -- but he does wish his mother would stop believing them.

"She calls up going, 'What's going on? I just read about you,'" Rhys says in an interview with People. "I tell her, 'You have to take off your Google alerts."

The Welsh actor (who plays a Russian playing an American on the show) and co-star Russell have been rumored as an item, due in part to Russell being newly separated. But Rhys insists it's nothing but rumors. "You have to brush that stuff off," he says.

Still, there's plenty of relationship to go around when Season 2 of "The Americans" begins, much to the chagrin of Rhys' family. "The sex scenes don't go down well in my house," he explains. "I've been told for the second season that I must warn them which episodes ... they should expect to look the other way. They never get quite used to it."

"The Americans" Season 2 premieres Wednesday (Feb. 26) at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.
