The renewal comes midway through Season 2, which has drawn nearly universal critical praise and has performed solidly in the ratings. Its numbers are down slightly from last season but it's still averaging about 3.1 million viewers and 1.5 million adults 18-49 in Live +7 ratings. (More than half of its audience comes from delayed viewing.)

"We are so delighted and grateful to continue telling the stories of these characters," executive producer Joel Fields says in a statement. "... The entire team at FX have been remarkable supporters and creative partners for the show -- and we are blessed to have Keri Russell, Matthew Rhys, Noah Emmerich, and an awesome ensemble who bring it all so brilliantly to life."

Adds fellow EP Joe Weisberg, "Seriously, if the Soviet Union had this level of support from its allies, the Cold War might have turned out differently."

Season 2 of "The Americans" continues at 10 p.m. ET/PT Wednesday (April 16) with an episode titled "New Car," in which Phillip (Rhys) and Elizabeth (Russell) deal with "painful turns" in their missions as Soviet spies. The season finale is scheduled for May 21.
