'The Bachelor's' Sarah Newlon explains Stand Up to Cancer sign that read 'Molina'Add to Favorites | The Bachelor
While players, coaches, booth announcers and crowd members were holding up signs of someone affected by cancer, former "Bachelor" contestant Sarah Newlon was spotted with a sign that read "Molina," chuckling with the friend she's sitting with -- video here at Deadspin.
The sites that spotted her immediately jumped on the inappropriateness of her actions -- since, presumably, St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina does not have cancer (though he has probably been affected by it, a lot of people have). In fact, one site erroneously says she's a Boston Red Sox fan. She's not. It's very clear from her Twitter feed that she's a Cardinals fan.
Newlon has taken to Twitter to explain the sign:
- "For those that think I would ever mock cancer, my sign meant which player inspires me to stand up to cancer. Im sorry it came across poorly."
- "Regarding the smiles, those around us pointed us out on the jumbotron, and that's what we smiled about."
- "In no way would we ever laugh or make fun of cancer."
That ... actually makes a lot of sense. Yadier Molina is one of the best catchers in the game who has been a Cardinal his entire career, so it would follow that a Cardinals fan would write his name down told to name a player who inspires them to stand up to cancer.
