Megan Boone is finding herself in hairy situations weekly on
but one has been especially persistent.
The normally short-coiffed actress admits she's wearing a wig while playing novice FBI profiler Elizabeth Keen on the NBC drama, one of the television season's top new hits. She also admits she finds it interesting that fellow "Blacklist" star
James Spader's new look appears to be accepted more readily than hers.
"People were talking about James' short hair when the show got started, but that went away," Boone tells
. "Mine didn't, and I don't know why. I think there's a little more scrutiny of the way women look, and it's been a challenge for me to tolerate that, but I'm OK with it.
"It ultimately was a character choice that I made in collaboration with the studio, the network, the producers and the other actors," Boone adds. "Everybody had their say in how Elizabeth's hair was going to look. We ultimately landed on it being long because it gave her a more naive, young look."
Boone reasons her own short hair might give "Lizzie" -- as informant Raymond "Red" Reddington (Spader) calls her -- a "little edgier" appearance, "and maybe that's to come later. But for now, we think this is the best choice.
"Have we had challenges with this hairstyle? I think so. I think we're still finding our footing, and people just need to give us a break and give us time to figure it out. We're delivering a really good show right off the bat, which is hard to do. I guess I would hope that the public would try to focus on other things."
With a laugh, Boone adds, "And stop picking on me!"
"The Blacklist" airs at 10 p.m. ET Monday on NBC.
