the-comeback-lisa-kudrow-hbo-new-episodes.jpgIt's official: HBO's cult favorite comedy series "The Comeback" is heading back to the network nearly a decade after its debut for a short comeback series of sorts.

According to E! Online, production on six new episodes is scheduled to begin May 19. HBO would not confirm details, but E! sources say writers have already begun on new scripts, which will see the show picking up nine years after the original series ended.

Stars Lisa Kudrow, Malin Akerman and Kellan Lutz are all expected to return, and show creator Michael Patrick King, "Scandal" star/writer Dan Bucantinsky (who's also Kudrow's producing partner) and "Carrie Diaries" creator Amy B. Harris are all part of the creative team.

"The Comeback" ran for 13 episodes in 2005, and followed Kudrow as Valerie Cherish, a washed-up sitcom star who joins a new show and allows reality show cameras to follow her around and capture her triumphant comeback (spoiler alert: it goes less-than-smoothly).

The new episodes are part of a "standalone event series," according to E!, but the show has the potential to return full-time if the new episodes do well enough.
