'The Descendants' on DVD: Shailene Woodley picks projects that feed her soul
"I've always said I'll never do something just because I'm supposed to ride the wave," she says. "For me, it's about doing projects that feed my soul. It's about creating art."
The Oscar-nominated film, starring Woodley and George Clooney, is out Tuesday (March 13) on DVD and Blu-ray. Based on Kaui Hart Hemmings' novel, "The Descendants" tells the moving story of husband and father Matt King (Clooney), who is trying to hold his family together following his wife's death in a boating accident.
Woodley, who plays King's teenage daughter Alexandra, spent a great deal of time crying onscreen during the tearjerker of a film. So how was she able to summon the waterworks for the emotional scenes?
"The words," she says. "For me it's not about thinking about when something sad happened in my life. For me it was just about surrendering."
The 20-year-old actress sounds both mature and focused on her craft, a sure sign that fans will hopefully continue to see her in other meaty roles.
Woodley returns to the small screen on March 26 when the ABC Family series "The Secret Life of the American Teenager" comes back with all-new episodes.
