El Rey Network continuings it's on-going interview program "The Director's Chair" Wednesday (July 30) with an in-depth interview with Guillermo del Toro ("The Strain," "Pan's Labyrinth"). Watch a preview above.

At the 2014 summer TCA press tour, filmmaker Robert Rodriguez, who conducts all the interviews for "The Director's Chair," told the audience that his interview with del Toro involved talking not only about del Toro's successes, but also a failure.

"We spent a lot of time talking about a failure. ... One of the movies that Guillermo had the most trouble on, that he tried to on his own, I was on the set for that," says Rodriguez. "I was helping him do second unit. He needed someone to come help him. So I knew stuff he didn't know that had happened behind closed doors that I was revealing that made everything make sense."

Rodriguez also says that he really had to do his homework for these interviews so that they wouldn't be fluff pieces.

"It takes a lot of study. It takes a lot of prep work, I found," he says. "I asked Peter Bogdanovich, who is one of the best directors at interviewing. ... He interviewed Orson Welles, Howard Hawks. He's so great at it, and I learned a lot from him. He would spend days to get that information. So I have to really do my homework so I can go in like a sniper and just get the best stuff."

"The Director's Chair" with Guillermo del Toro airs July 30 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on El Rey, with the next installment, featuring Quentin Tarantino, airing Wednsday, Aug. 27. The first installment, featuring John Carpenter, premiered in May 2014.
