The aspiring models realize the competition will be intense when they find themselves parading about in their underwear in the middle of Manhattan.
On the opening episode of the second season of Oxygen's
airing Wednesday, March 5, aspiring contestants strut down a catwalk in Bryant Park wearing black bras and panties while model coaches -- Naomi Campbell, Lydia Hearst and Anne V -- select hopefuls for their teams.
"There is a lot that you try to teach these girls in a very limited amount of time," Hearst tells
. "I want them to understand it is a very difficult and fickle industry, and you have to be willing to grow and challenge yourself and step outside your comfort zone. Nothing is truly personal. You have to have thick skin. You have to be willing to change your hair color."

Hearst and her co-coaches teach the tricks of the trade while the dozen young women compete in different challenges. A representative from the brand used on each episode picks that week's winning team. The coaches from the other two teams each nominate a model to be cut, and the winning team's coach picks who is eliminated.
Ultimately the winner will become a spokesmodel for Frederic Fekkai.
"It is difficult because these girls become your responsibility, and you do see a lot of yourself in each and every one of them," Hearst says. "You feel maternal working so closely with these girls, and it reminds you a lot of how you were at that age."
Hearst's tips to present like a model:
• "Embrace their flaws," she says. "There is no such thing as the perfect beauty. You have to genuinely love yourself for who you are. You can buy cosmetics and enhance your natural beauty. If you are not comfortable in your own skin, the lens will capture that."
• Hydrate and moisturize and wear sunscreen.
• "It is important for everybody to have a healthy exercise routine," Hearst says. "Stick to it every single day, and it will help you every single day."
