The pilot for "The Flash" has cast its first non-Barry Allen character. "Law & Order" alumnus Jesse L. Martin will play Detective West, Barry's father figure.

West is described as an honest blue-collar cop who has supported Barry ( Grant Gustin) for years. Also the father of Iris -- Barry's possible love interest -- West is one of the few who believes in Barry's attempts to exonerate a father imprisoned for killing his mother.

Best-known for playing Detective Ed Green on approximately 200 episodes of "Law & Order," Martin's career also includes the second season of "Smash" and a major role in the theatrical hit, "Rent."

The Hollywood Reporter first reported this casting. At least one other actor, "Ghostbusters" alum Ernie Hudson, was considered for the role before Martin landed the part.

"The Flash" had originally been intended as a back-door pilot and a spinoff from The CW's popular crime-fighting series, "Arrow." Following a well-received pair of episodes in the fall, however, the network decided to make a standalone pilot for this promising series.
