"The Following" has added another agent to its ranks in the hunt for Joe Carroll (James Purefoy): "Homeland" alum Valerie Cruz has just been cast for Season 2 of the Fox drama.

Cruz will play NYPD detective Gina Mendez, who will work closely with Mike Weston (Shawn Ashmore) and the FBI when a new murder spree hits New York City, E! Online reports. The "hard as nails," detective will first appear in the Season 2 premiere, which picks up a year after the events of the finale.

While it's not surprising that "The Following" is trying to beef up its number of agents in the quest to stop serial killers from doing their thing, what is surprising is that executive producer Kevin Williamson revealed at Comic-Con that fans can expect to see less FBI-centric story lines when the show returns in January. So maybe Detective Mendez may not have a permanent partnership with Agent Weston -- if you know what we mean ...

We mean that she's probably going to die. Sorry, Cruz!

Season 2's cast just keeps on growing: Connie Nielsen will play a new love interest for Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon), while "Dexter" baddie Sam Underwood will take on another dark role

"The Following" returns to Fox in January 2014.
