'The Fosters' casting scoop: Lorraine Toussaint joins upcoming ABC Family series
Zap2It has exclusively learned that Lorraine Toussaint ("Friday Night Lights," "Saving Grace") has been cast in the recurring role of Carol, mother of Lena Adams ( Sherri Saum, "In Treatment"). Carol is described as a charismatic African-American woman who is a professor of Black Women's Studies at Berkeley and enjoys the spotlight. This being an ABC Family series, of course there is some friction between her and her daughter.
"The Fosters" tells the story of a multi-ethnic family mix of foster and biological kids being raised by two lesbian mothers, the aforementioned Lena and Stef Foster ( Teri Polo, "Meet the Parents"). The cast also includes Jake T. Austin, Hayden Byerly, David Lambert, Maia Mitchell, Danny Nucci and Cierra Ramirez.
Addressing several social topics including the foster care system, blended families and gay marriage, the show, executive produced by Jennifer Lopez, will premiere Monday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET on ABC Family, following the series finale of "The Secret Life of the American Teenager."
