'The Fosters': Kerr Smith knows it's weird for you that he's playing a dad
"You think it makes you feel old?!" Smith says with a laugh when Zap2it mentions that the fleeting passage of time is felt more acutely when actors known for their beloved teenage characters take on parental roles. "As an actor it's a very strange adjustment to start playing the father. I was used to playing a kid my whole life and then all of a sudden, it's like, boom. I guess when I let my hair go grey things changed."
Smith joins "The Fosters" as Robert Quinn, a.k.a. the birth father of Maia Mitchell's Callie who must give his consent for Callie to be adopted into the Foster family. He tells Zap2it that he'd tuned in to "The Fosters" before because he'd heard it shared a lot in common with "Life Unexpected," the CW drama he starred in for two seasons a few years ago.
"I was really impressed," he says. "It's a wholesome show. It's about hope and it's about family and it's got good values and it's about doing the right thing."
While you won't have to wait too long for the truth about Quinn's identity to come out, Smith will only hint at how the storyline will play out throughout Season 2. "What I can say is that Robert is going to forge some kind of relationship with Callie, but we all know her character and how stubborn she can be so there's going to be some walls," he says.
And yes, he'll interact with other members of the family. "Getting to know Callie means getting to know the Fosters," he says, specifically both matriarchs, but "there's one really cool episode about five or six episodes from now where I get to know the family a little bit."
"The Fosters" airs Mondays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC Family. Watch an exclusive clip from Season 2 episode 2, "Take Me Out," below.
