'The Gayle King Show': Taylor Swift and Katy Perry are Gayle's dream guests
King sees the show as an extension of her successful radio show. "We've been doing this on radio for the past 5 years, and so far, knock on wood, it's been very successful... I want to figure out a way to capture the intimacy on what we do on radio and bring it to TV," she says. "I'm grateful that radio has given me this opportunity."
Well, yeah. Radio... and Oprah.
She's not too worried about the mercurial nature of live television, because she's used to it on radio. "Live television really is like working without a net. Whatever happens, happens. You can't take it back. In the moment, you have to figure out a way, can I course-correct it, or can I keep it moving?" she says. "People are very understanding when you explain to them what is going on. They're very forgiving. They get it. I think people like seeing the imperfections. The secret is not to have a lot of imperfections, so I'm thrilled that it's live."
So if she's so comfortable in radio, why the move? King admits that she hopes that the connection with OWN will help bring in some big-name guest stars. Her dream guests? Taylor Swift and Katy Perry. "I'm crazy for Katy Perry," she confesses. "That song 'I Kissed a Girl,' I was like okay, that's cute, but she really got me with that song 'Firework.' It makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I dare anyone to listen to that song and not say 'let your colors burst!'"
