the-mindy-project-season-3.jpgMindy Kaling doesn't necessarily see an end in sight when it comes to her FOX sitcom "The Mindy Project," which has maintained modest ratings over its first two seasons.

"I have a lot of stamina because I came from 'The Office' where we did so many episodes for so many years," she tells reporters after a panel at the 2014 summer TV press tour. "I could see doing the show for a very long time. Those characters are so entertaining to me."

FOX CEO and chairman Peter Rice says he's a fan of the show, and he hopes more viewers tune in to to Season 3 when it premieres Sept. 16.

"I love 'The Mindy Project,'" says Rice. "I think it's really funny and smart. I think she's a great showrunner. I hope it continues to be written at the quality it [has been], and I hope that it finds an audience."

He continues, "We have tried to construct a night now where we think it can bring a little bit more compatible flow to it, so my hopes are very high for it. I think it's a terrific show, and she's a great showrunner."

As for Season 3, Kaling says that not only will one of her character's recent ex-boyfriends return in episode 2, the writers are currently scripting an arc for a soon-to-be-named actress to play Danny's (Chris Messina) mom.

"We're very close to making an announcement about a very cool guest star who's going to recur on the show to play Danny's mom," Kaling says. She's "someone who's a source of conflict for my character."

Danny and Mindy will be going strong when Season 3 begins, and Kaling says she's been looking to sitcoms like "Everybody Loves Raymond" and "Modern Family" -- specifically the Claire/Phil relationship -- for inspiration.

The single-person stories will instead be taken over by Peter (Adam Pally). "Peter becomes kind of the new Mindy in terms of who he's dating and him wanting to become a better person and him getting his heart broken, which he deserves. He should get his ass kicked because the character's kind of obnoxious. For us it's been really good to have him be where Mindy started out ... trying to figure things out and become a better guy."

"The Mindy Project" Season 3 premieres Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
