'The Social Network' gets $23 mil from friends at the box office

David Fincher's film starring Jesse Eisenberg earned $23 million in its first weekend out, enough to take the lead at the weekend box office, according to early estimates by Exhibitor Relations.

The film also co-stars Justin Timberlake, Andrew Garfield, Max Minghella, Rooney Mara, Armie Hammer, Bryan Barter and Joseph Mazzello.

Second place went to the winged kind, "Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole" far behind with $10.9 million.

"Case 39" and "Let Me In" also opened in wide release, but came in further behind. Among the indie films, the education documentary "Waiting for Superman," the film adaptation of "Never Let Me Go" and "Jack Goes Boating" had healthy per-screen averages.
