As if bikers weren't enough to deal with, FX is getting into the vampire gamer by ordering 13 episodes of "The Strain." The series comes from director Guillermo del Toro ("Pacific Rim"), writer/producer Carlton Cuse ("Lost") and Chuck Hogan, who wrote the trilogy of novels the series is based on.
Hogan and del Toro wrote the pilot and will serve as executive producers on the project. Cuse will also executive produce, along with his roles as showrunner and writer.
The cast includes Corey Stoll, Mia Maestro, Sean Astin, Kevin Durand, Natalie Brown, Jonathan Hyde, Richard Sammel, Robert Maillet, Jack Kesy, Ben Hyland and Miguel Gomez. The series follows Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Stroll) as the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. His team is tasked with investigating a viral outbreak that has a link to an ancient strain of vampirism. The strain spreads, leaving the Doctor, his team and a collection of New Yorkers to fight it for the good of mankind.
Don't expect your run of the mill vampire story, as Cuse says in a release, "Guillermo's epic, cinematic pilot for 'The Strain' starts a chilling and compelling story that will upend everything you thought you knew about vampires."
"The Strain" is aiming for a July 2014 premiere on FX.
