'The Tomorrow People': Robbie Amell's naked truth on the Cara aftermath, dad issues and moreAdd to Favorites | The Tomorrow People
According to this interview with Robbie Amell, it's only going to get worse.
Warning: There are some big spoilers about the love triangle, the return of Stephen's dad and more. Keep reading at your own peril.
First of all congratulations on getting a full season of the show! How did you hear the news?
Robbie Amell: I was standing naked in my kitchen. I came upstairs from the gym, I was about to hop in the shower, when my phone buzzed. It was a call from Phil Klemmer, our writer-creator. And I was too nervous to call him back right away, so I opened my computer and Googled "The Tomorrow People" news. So I called him, and he gave me the good news.
What's coming for Stephen in the next few episodes?
Robbie Amell: Episode 7 almost feels like the calm before the storm. It's a very heavy episode itself, but it really sets up the rest of the season. It starts off with the aftermath of episode 6 -- with Cara and I hooking up -- and then things just get s***tier or worse for Stephen.
He's lost his two partners in six episodes. He's getting people killed and all of the stuff with his family and not being able to tell anybody and Astrid finding out and all his powers and then everything that goes down with Cara -- at the beginning of the episode, he actually goes to ULTRA and asks for some time off. He just needs to step away from it. And you get to see what a normal, teenaged kid would use his powers for: becoming popular, winning basketball games, hooking up, and just using the powers that probably someone would, rather than trying to save their species from being extinct.
But that turns very quickly from having fun and partying with these powers, to a very dark episode with no powers -- because Jedikiah strips them from me for the episode -- and trying to track down a breakout who's actually a Tomorrow Person rapist. So it gets dark very quickly.
At the end of the episode, you actually see my dad for the first time that isn't in a flashback. He ends up being the catalyst for episodes 8 and 9, and really for the rest of the episodes this season.
What is the aftermath of Stephen and Cara sleeping together?
Robbie Amell: The episode actually picks up right from where it left off, with Cara and I waking up in a hotel room where we teleported to, and she puts an end to things very quickly. It seems like we may have jumped the gun, and she thinks it was a mistake. Stephen obviously doesn't -- he's in love with her.
You find out throughout the episode that there is something deeper there that neither one of them, but they don't really know what it is. Ultimately, it looks like she chooses John. But I think it's a long way from being over.
With the death of Darcy, Stephen has lost his second ULTRA partner. How will this affect him?
Robbie Amell: It really starts to weigh on Stephen. He's an 18-year-old kid -- even though I don't look like it -- and he's been through a lot. Last year, he thinks he's losing his mind. And then all of the sudden, he thinks things are going to get much better. He's got these powers, but really, things have only gotten worse. He's fighting all these battles and he's losing. He's losing all these battles at ULTRA and he's losing partners and people that he grows to care about. He's losing his battles at home -- he can't tell his mom the truth and he's kind of screwing things up with his brother. And he's losing battles with the Tomorrow People. He's got too much on his plate.
He's trying to make everybody happy, and he's just screwing things up. I feel like, as the season goes on, it keeps getting worse and worse, until he just starts to fall apart.
How is Astrid going to figure into Stephen's life, now that she knows his secret?
Robbie Amell: It's the superhero syndrome. If somebody close to you knows about your powers, it's just a ticking time-bomb until they're used against you, whether it's as a hostage or as a threat to them. There's no way she's going to get out of this without some sort of ... She's going to be used against Stephen at some point for sure.
In episode 7, Astrid and Cara meet for the first time. It's a very quick exchange. And by episode 9, Astrid meets all of the Tomorrow People.
It's that little bit of love that he needs in his life. He keeps letting her in farther and farther.
"The Tomorrow People" airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on The CW.
