'The Vampire Diaries' 100th episode: Matt Davis thanks the fans for the Alaric loveAdd to Favorites | The Vampire Diaries
Many characters have come and gone during the past 99 episodes of "The Vampire Diaries," but the one that left the biggest hole in the series when he died was Alaric Saltzman (Matt Davis).
The history teacher/vampire hunter-turned-parental figure for the Gilbert siblings/Damon's drinking buddy-turned-Original vampire/vampire hunter-turned-ghost remains one of the biggest fan favorite characters of The CW's supernatural drama.
When he died (the first time) in a graveyard surrounded by his loved ones, Alaric's send off was emotional, powerful and paid tribute to how much everyone had grown to care for him (and coupled with The Fray's "Be Still?" Yeah, we didn't stand a chance). Then he came back as a villain for a short stint before he died for good.
The few brief times we've seen him since as a ghost have been equally as powerful as his goodbye -- and the fans live for every second of those appearances.
When Zap2it caught up with Davis down in Atlanta during "The Vampire Diaries" 100th episode wrap party, he had a message for those dedicated fans. "I'd like to say to the fans, thank you. I love you. Alaric loves all of them," Davis says with a smile. "It's been this really wonderful experience for me as an actor to connect with the fans who have been so responsive to a character that I've been playing. Whenever Alaric comes back, whether he does or doesn't in the future, it's always fun for me because I know it's a chance for me to reconnect with the fans who have been so generous and gracious."
As Davis looked back on the past 100 episodes of "TVD," he couldn't believe that the series made it to this point. "It's so surreal to me," Davis says. "I've lost all concept of time, realizing I came in on the 8th episode and now they're on the 100th; it's incredible. The life experience that's been crammed into five seasons just behind the scenes, as friends and family, is just amazing."
Davis was glad to be back in Atlanta for the party with all his past co-stars and the crew after being away. "It's great. They're all my family, my brothers and sisters," Davis says. "It's so much fun to reunite with everyone and catch up. We always have a great time together."
And although we tried as hard as we could to get some scoop on the big 100th episode and whether or not we'd get another powerful Alaric appearance, Davis knew the "TVD" drill: Don't. Reveal. Any. Secrets.
"I don't know anything, I haven't read it," Davis says with a laugh. "I'm just here for the party."
"The Vampire Diaries" 100th episode airs Thursday (Jan. 23) at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
