Executive producer Julie Plec announced on Twitter Monday (July 14) that a new face is heading to Mystic Falls to give Caroline's mom "a run for her money."

"Hey #TVD twitter folk, see how long it takes for you guys to figure out who just got cast in the new role of TRIPP for season 6," Plec tweeted. "For those of you who are sneaky/savvy and see the casting sides, the role was formerly called MITCH."

The mystery was quickly solved when a fan tweeted to Plec asking if it was Colin Ferguson, and she replied, "Yes indeed!"

Then, Ferguson -- best known for playing Jack Carter on "Eureka" -- shared the news on Twitter himself. "Hmmm.... Seem to have 'tripped' my way into a new role... Mystic Falls, hunh? This is gonna be fun :)," Ferguson tweeted. "Classic! Everyone who knows the show is telling me I'm going to die. I think I packed too much.."

Ferguson's Tripp is the head of a community militia who will "do anything to protect his town," so it sounds like Sheriff Forbes' plate is going to be full when The CW drama returns this fall.

"The Vampire Diaries" Season 6 premieres Thursday, Oct. 2 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
