'The Vampire Diaries' Season 6: Matt Davis' Alaric returns as series regular

Many fates changed during "The Vampire Diaries" Season 5 finale on Thursday (May 15), and many of them were sad (RIP Lexi, Grams, Bonnie and Damon ... for good. Yes, for good). But not all of it was tear-inducing.

Before the Other Side crumbled for good, taking with it the anchor and all the supernatural souls that didn't manage to slip through before it went away, Elena, Stefan, Tyler, Enzo, Luke and Alaric Saltzman managed to come back through, alive and well. That's right, Alaric's back!

The history teacher/vampire hunter/Gilbert guardian's fate was confirmed as soon as the finale, "Home," ended when TVGuide.com reported that Matt Davis would be back for Season 6. And get this: He's coming back as a series regular! That's a good thing, since both Gilberts lost their significant others in the finale and are going to need all the parental help they can get.

Alaric was first introduced all the way back in Season 1, and in Season 3, Original witch Esther turned him into a vampire/vampire hunter to kill her children. But she bound his life to Elena's, so when she died and came back as a vampire, he died for good. He then returned a few times during Season 4 and once during the 100th episode as a ghost. But now he's back as a human.

Break out the bourbon to celebrate (and to drown all your sorrows for those who didn't make it through).

"The Vampire Diaries" returns this fall on Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
