'The Voice' Season 6 final battles: The Top 20 is set

the-voice-season-6-final-battles-kat-perkins-dani-moz.jpgTime for the final battles of "The Voice" Season 6. At this point, each coach has 5-7 team members remaining but Blake is the only coach with a steal left, so the singers who don't win their battles Monday (April 7) are more or less out of luck.

Battle 1: Dani Moz vs. Clarissa Serna (Team Shakira)
Song: "Perfect" by Pink
I prefer Dani's voice in general, but they're both incredibly strong singers and the harmony on the chorus is really nice. They both hit some gigantic high notes and both have great stage presence, this is tough. At this point, it's so much about personal preference, so I would pick Dani, but there's nothing wrong with Shakira going with Clarissa. I feel like Blake should steal whomever doesn't win, but they wouldn't have put this battle first if Blake used his steal here, so unfortunately, one of them is going home.
Winner: Shakira picks Dani, which I'm excited about. Blake does not steal Clarissa.

Battle 2: Kat Perkins vs. Dawn & Hawkes (Team Adam)
Song: "Suddenly I See" by KT Tunstall
I'm not wild about the toned down arrangement. Part of what's great about the original is the peppiness, this is too plodding. Did you see Levine bobbing back and forth? It's like he was trying to will the song to go faster. Anyway, they might ding Kat for over-singing, but I like what she's doing more on this song. In fact, the other two seem like her back-up singers. They're very boring. Now, overall, I have preferred Dawn & Hawkes so far this season, but on this performance, Kat is really shining, so it's tough. Do you go by overall performances or this one performance? I think I'd go with Kat, but this is a hard one. It's not like she's been bad before this performance, so it really isn't just basing it on one performance. Hmm.
Winner: Interestingly, Blake agrees with me that D&H feel like Kat's back-up singers on this. Adam chooses Kat, which I think is the right choice. Blake does not use his steal.

Battle 3
: Melissa Jimenez vs. Music Box (Team Usher)
Song: "Girl On Fire" by Alicia Keys
They both start off fine, but on the chorus, Music Box is making it sound effortless and Melissa seems like she is working hard to keep up. Of course, no sooner do I type that than Melissa has some pretty runs and Music way, way over-sings on her high notes. This one's tough because neither one of them is really nailing this, honestly. It's a real shame that Clarissa is gone and one of these two has to advance. I'd take Dani/Clarissa both and send both of these girls home, if I could. But if I have to choose, I'd give it Music Box.
Winner: Usher chooses Melissa, though. Interesting. Nothing wrong with that, she didn't blow it or anything. Blake does not steal Music Box.

Battle 4: Kaleigh Glanton vs. Ryan Whyte Maloney (Team Blake)
Song: "Easy" by Rascal Flatts feat. Natasha Bedingfield
It's interesting to hear Ryan's voice on this because the tone of his voice is so much different than Gary Vox. The low stuff is a little fuzzy, but he hits a good stride on the chorus. Kaleigh, however, sounds excellent right out of the gate. She has one of the prettiest tones of anyone on the show this season, plus Ryan gets real screamy near the end. It's not pretty. I want Ryan to stay in the competition because I like him, but Kaleigh is just flat-out a stronger singer. I'd pick her.
Winner: But Blake goes with Ryan and there is no save for Kaleigh. Bummer.

Battle 5: Jake Barker vs. Brittnee Camelle (Team Adam)
Song: "Climax" by Usher
Gotta say, this was not a good song choice for Jake. Falsettos like Usher's do not just grow on trees and Jake does not have the stuff to pull this off. Brittnee sounds nice and Jake does a good job on the lower stuff, but the higher stuff? Nope, sorry. This round firmly goes to Brittnee.
Winner: The judges are way too easy on Jake, do they ever get very critical? Because they just seem to be full of platitudes all the time. Anyway, Adam chooses Jake, which really baffles me, but OK. Blake does not use his steal, which is not a surprise. I feel like he's got his eye on Madilyn Paige.

Battle 6: Madilyn Paige vs. Bria Kelly (Team Usher)
Song: "I'll Stand By You" by The Pretenders
It'll be nice to hear Bria be more restrained, but I'm nervous that this song so heavily favors Madilyn that it's just not even fair. Then when they start singing, Bria sounds terribly sharp -- is that because of the weird vibrato going on in her voice? Also, the entire performance falls really flat here, which is weird. Either way, I much prefer Madilyn's voice. But Usher might like Bria, she's definitely unique. Neither one really blew it out the box, honestly.
Winner: Usher chooses Bria and then Blake steals Madilyn, which is interesting since he wasn't wild about that performance. It's not as though these had to happen in the order they aired, so Blake isn't forced to choose Madilyn because she's the only person left and he still has to use his steal.
