Austin performer, Nakia, made a splash in the blind rounds when he became the only contestant on "The Voice" to sing one of the coaches' songs and get chosen by that same coach ( Cee Lo Green's "Forget You"). He then eliminated fellow Texan and fan favorite, Tje Austin, in the battle rounds -- an unpopular pairing to many fans who didn't want to see either of the strong singers go.
Nakia, though, saw the pairing as a vote of confidence from his coach. "At the end of the day," Nakia tells Zap2it. "[Cee Lo's] there to win the show. So, if the finale was tomorrow and I was the person representing Team Cee Lo in the finale, I feel like he believes in me enough and is confident in me enough as a singer to win that performance."
Truthfully, we're just glad he's in the competition. If it was solely up to Nakia, we may not have ever had the pleasure of hearing the singer's powerful, bluesy voice. Thankfully, he had someone who urged him to answer the show's call to audition. Nakia had enjoyed some success in his hometown and had even put out a couple records, but nothing broke through to the national level. And he was actually fine with that.
"What defines success for me is happiness, and I've always been content doing what I do at the level I've done it," he tells us. "But, there's always been something in the back of my mind -- and usually that thing has been my partner, Robert, telling me to try harder and to do something more."
So with his partner's urging and support, Nakia accepted NBC's offer to audition. But, now, that must feel like eons ago. And the performer admits that the worst part of being on the show is waiting around for the next phase.
"I'm an impatient guy," he says. "So, television and most entertainment things that involve cameras and production crews, there's a lot of 'hurry up and wait.' So, I'm ready to get back to work with Cee Lo. I'm ready to get back on stage again and really have another opportunity to connect with America again."
He'll get his chance on Tuesday's (June 14) episode when Team Cee Lo hits the stage for the second round of live performances. When we spoke to Nakia about what he wants to serve up in the live round, he described the kind of song that would do the job.
"What I feel is important right now is to give America a chance to emotionally connect with me," he says. "So, I'm going to choose a song that really lets me have a moment on television where they can truly see my heart and soul and really connect with me on a deep level."
Are you excited to welcome Nakia back to the stage?
