'The Vow' and 'Safe House' both open big at the box office

the-vow-box-office.jpgIt's shaping up to be a pretty big weekend at the box office, as both "The Vow" and "Safe House" recorded big openings on Friday (Feb. 10). The 3-D rerelease of "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace" also did pretty well.

"The Vow," starring Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams, drew big pre-Valentine's Day crowds and earned an estimated $15.35 million on Friday. On a lot of weekends that would put in position for a runaway win, but not this one.

That's because "Safe House," a thriller with Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds, raked in $13.8 million. Both movies are on pace to make well above $30 million for the weekend.

"The Phantom Menace" and the weekend's other new release, "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island," also performed solidly on Friday. The first "Star Wars" movie to get the 3-D treatment earned an estimated $8.65 million, while "Journey 2" made about $6.6 million.

Last week's leader, "Chronicle," finished fifth with $3.5 million, down almost 60 percent from a week ago.
