'The X Factor' sets key dates: Short-ish audition round, live shows in November

x-factor-key-dates.jpg "The X Factor" will not spend too much time on the mass-audition phase of the show. But it's going to spend a good amount of time time narrowing the field to the finalists.

FOX's version of the British hit will premiere Wednesday, Sept. 21. Two-hour episodes will air on Wednesdays and Thursdays for the first two weeks of the show, taking viewers through the cast-of-thousands auditions in six cities.

The second round -- "Boot Camp" in "X Factor" parlance -- airs Oct. 5 and 6. The singers who make it past the first audition will face a live audience and the four judges -- Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, Nicole Scherzinger and L.A. Reid -- and sing for a chance to get to the semifinals.

The following week, the remaining contestants will be divided into four subsets (young guys, young girls, older singers and groups), with each working with a judge to hone their skills. Those episodes will air Oct. 12 and 13 in their regular time periods, with a special Tuesday airing wrapping up that round on Oct. 18.

The show will take over Tuesday night again on Oct. 25 when the finalists are revealed in a two-and-a-half-hour extravaganza. Live performance and results shows start Nov. 2 and stick to the regular Wednesday-Thursday schedule -- except for the week of Thanksgiving, when it will air on Tuesday and Wednesday. The winner will be crowned on Dec. 22 in a two-hour season finale.
