tim-howard-goalie-team-usa-belgium-loss-world-cup.jpgAmerican hero Tim Howard made 16 saves during Team USA's heartbreaking loss to Belgium in the Round of 16 during the 2014 FIFA World Cup -- the most recorded World Cup history -- but his herculean efforts weren't enough.

Howard's spectacular game doesn't exactly show in the end score -- Belgium managed to slip two goals past him and the U.S. only managed one great one in return -- but he managed to fend off Belgian attackers for the entire 90-minute regulation time. Ultimately, though, you can't win a soccer game single-handedly.

After the game, he brushed off praise from an ESPN reporter. "That's my job. That's what I signed up to do," he said, adding that the loss was "heartbreaking. I don't think we could've given it any more. We left it all out there, and we got beaten by a really good team."

Twitter took note of Howard's amazing work -- here are some of the best tweets about Tim Howard, American hero.
