Tim Tebow: Patriots fan Michael Chiklis excited at QB's signing
Via his Twitter account on June 10, Dorchester, Mass., native Donnie Wahlberg writes, "Tim Tebow to the @patriots is awesome! A real coach & QB, like Belichick & Brady, know the one way to make Tebow a weapon ... #ThePatriotWay!"
Wahlberg isn't alone in his enthusiasm.
Born in Lowell, Mass., Michael Chiklis -- seen last season on the CBS series "Vegas" -- is a dedicated sports fan, especially of baseball's Boston Red Sox and, of course, pro football's Patriots.
Contacted by Zap2it via Facebook, Chiklis -- who calls Patriots QB Tom Brady a "friend" -- says he's very excited at the Tebow news.
He tells us, "Coach [Bill] Belichick is a genius at picking up largely overlooked and underestimated players and plugging them into the Patriots system with devastating effectiveness -- Tom Brady, Teddy Bruschi, Wes Welker and Danny Woodhead to name a few. Like these men, Tebow might be lacking in areas while under assessment, but they are all intelligent and willing to give a perfect effort.
"The Patriots' key to success has not been with its individuals but instead with a team that are all executing with everything they've got until the final play is over. Clearly, Bill sees a way in which to utilize Tebow's speed on the ground.
"Tom is a pocket QB ... Tebow's arm pales in comparison, but he has legs. Maybe some wildcat action is in the cards this season? We shall see ... but I have tremendous confidence in Coach B! BTW, no one is replacing Tom Brady. Tebow will be a situation QB."
Chiklis has another kind of football on his mind at the moment. He's in New Orleans filming "When the Game Stands Tall," about the remarkable 151-game unbeaten streak of Concord (Calif.) De La Salle High School's football team from 1992-2004. He plays an assistant coach of the team in the film, which also stars Jim Caviezel, Laura Dern, Alexander Ludwig and Joe Massingill.
Thomas Carter ("Coach Carter") is directing the movie, which is based on a book by Neil Hayes and is due for release in 2014.
"I have spent the last two months shooting this wonderful story of sportsmanship, integrity, accountability, camaraderie, adversity, perfect effort and love," he writes
Chiklis also sees CBS' cancellation of "Vegas" in sports terms.
In a guest post for his wife's Michelle Chiklis' blog, "Carpool, Couture and Cocktails," Chiklis compares it to losing a championship game, writing, "You're part of a great team that has worked so hard toward a common goal, forming close bonds in the process, overcoming great odds and multiple obstacles to finally get a chance at the big brass ring, only to have it swiped away in the last seconds of the game."
Tebow signed a two-year, non-guaranteed deal with the Patriots and reported to the team's minicamp on Tuesday (June 11).
