TNT orders Michael Bay-produced series 'The Last Ship'
TNT is hoping you'll come aboard "The Last Ship."
The network announced Tuesday (May 7) that it has greenlit a 10-episodes season of the Michael Bay-produced drama, based on William Brinkley's popular novel. McSteamy himself, "Grey's Anatomy"s Eric Dane, stars as Captain Tom Chandler.
The series, set to launch in 2014, tells the story of the U.S.S. Nathan James, a Navy destroyer that, because of its positioning, avoided falling victim to a devastating tragedy that has decimated the world's population. The crew and its captain must confront the reality of their new existence in a world where they may be among the few remaining survivors.
Dane's character is a career Navy man, described as "authoritative and decisive, but also fair and courageous," who is respected and loved by those under his command. The series also stars Rhona Mitra ("Strike Back") as Rachel Scott, a paleomicrobiologist assigned to the ship to investigate the cause of the billions of deaths worldwide. Adam Baldwin ("Chuck") plays Slattery, the ship's second-in-command who deeply worries about his family and occasionally clashes with Chandler. Tracy Middendorf ("Boardwalk Empire") plays Darien Chandler, the captain's wife.
"'The Last Ship' has all the elements of a big Hollywood blockbuster, from its epic storytelling to its top-notch cast headed by the perfect leading man, Eric Dane," Michael Wright, president, head of programming for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies (TCM), said in a statement. "Michael Bay and his fellow executive producers have shaped William Brinkley's story and characters into an exceptional drama full of action, suspense, tragedy and triumph. 'The Last Ship' is smart, fun television that takes you on a great ride."
In related "Michael Bay boat shows" news, his pirate drama "Black Sails" has been set for a January 2014 premiere on Starz, the network announced on Tuesday. The series tells the story of Captain Flint ( Toby Stephens) and his men, taking place 20 years prior to Robert Louis Stevenson's classic "Treasure Island." Flint, takes on a fast-talking young addition to his crew, one who happens to go by the name John Silver ( Luke Arnold).
