Tom Cruise denies Church of Scientology auditioned girlfriends for him
According to Maureen Orth's piece, Shelly Miscavige, the wife of Scientology leader David Miscavige, headed up the effort, which eventually led to Cruise dating actress Nazanin Boniadi from November 2004 to January 2005.
"Vanity Fair's story is essentially a rehash of tired old lies previously run in the supermarket tabloids, quoting the same bogus 'sources,'" Cruise's attorney Bert Fields says, according to CNN. "It's long, boring and false."
The church, meanwhile, calls the Vanity Fair report "hogwash."
"There was no project, secret or otherwise, ever conducted by the Church to find a bride (audition or otherwise) for any member of the church," the church says in a statement. "The allegation and entire premise of the Vanity Fair article is totally false ... We have been denying this ridiculous tale now since it first appeared in print four years ago."
However, Vanity Fair spokesperson Beth Kseniak says the magazine stands by its story.
