Tom Hardy to star in 'Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell' movie: Can it break video game curse?

It's the second consecutive casting coup for gaming company Ubisoft, which recently set another breakthrough actor from the U.K. -- Michael Fassbender -- to star in an adaptation of "Assassin's Creed."

Hollywood doesn't have a very good track record with turning video games into movies, but Ubisoft is clearly making an effort to change that. While neither "Splinter" nor "Assassin's" has a director attached yet, having acclaimed actors involved in the early stages should help attract top talent.

According to Variety, Hardy -- whose credits include blockbusters "The Dark Knight Rises" and "Inception" -- will play "Splinter" hero Sam Fisher, a covert operative working within a sub-division of the NSA.
