'Transformers: Dark of the Moon' opening falls way short of 'Revenge of the Fallen'
But its opening day box-office take came up well behind that of the second "Transformers" movie two years ago.
"Dark of the Moon" made an estimated $37.7 million on Wednesday. On the plus side, that's the biggest opening day for any movie this year, passing the $34.9 million "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" made in its first day. It also made $5.5 million at sneak peeks on Tuesday, giving a total of $43.2 million.
Compared to the opening for "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," however, the new movie pales. "ROTF," which also opened on a Wednesday (June 24, 2009), made $62 million on its first day and ended up with $200 million by the end of its first weekend. "Dark of the Moon" is running ahead of its predecessor overseas; it made $36.6 million Tuesday and Wednesday, Paramount estimates, 20 percent better than "Revenge of the Fallen's" opening-day foreign haul.
As was the case with the previous two "Transformers" movies, critics were unkind. Exit polling on moviegoers has been more positive, though, so word of mouth could help the movie through the long weekend.
